Chapter Seventeen

TUFF COULDN’T stop grinning.

The show hadn’t been packed, exactly, but the crowd had been big enough and friendly enough that he’d sailed right through without having to talk much, or without waxing all bitter about the tatters of his career.

Hell, he’d half expected the good-old-boy crowd that frequented Billy Bob’s to freak out about him and Jonah singing their duet, but the crowd had gone nuts after the last notes had faded, giving them a standing O.

Jesus, that was a good feeling.

Almost as good as singing on stage with Jo. That had made his soul ring, swear to God. He’d had to work hard not to stare at Jo-Jo the whole damned show, in fact.

Jo-Jo had come out looking like a young Willie, like sex on a stick, and that voice was meant to sing with him.

“Damn, Tuff, that was a fine show,” Mark said, coming backstage to pump his hand.

He gave Mark a man hug, grinning wide. It had been fun. Genuinely fun. “Thanks, buddy.”

“That was a hell of a duet. Y’all need to think about cutting it.”

“You think so? I like it—the way our voices meld.” Like it? He loved it. He wanted to record it now. Immediately.

He knew Jo-Jo didn’t want that, though, and he was frickin’ determined not to push. Tuff glanced around, making sure Jonah was still in the bathroom.

“How many songs did he write for me, Mark?”

“Lots. Everything with Levain; he’s Gary Em, he’s Noah Winter.”

“Jesus.” He was going to have to kick Mark’s ass. He really was. “I had no idea.”

“He didn’t want to screw with you, I don’t think.”

“No, I reckon not.” He raised a brow at Mark. “How much do you know?”

“About what?”

“About me and Jonah.” He’d never talked straight-out to Mark about it, and the man hadn’t been around when Jo-Jo had walked out, but Mark wasn’t stupid and rumors were like roaches.

“Enough to know it was a good thing for your career that y’all weren’t together, trying to hide.”

“Yeah.” Christ. He wondered if that was part of his sudden best-new-artist status. If the powers that be had decided he was never going to get married and start doing what he was supposed to, so his career had a shorter shelf life than they thought.

It didn’t matter now. He knew what he wanted, and that was Jonah. He’d figure the rest out on his own.

He could always write songs under a pseudonym….

“Everything okay?” Jonah asked when he walked up.

“Okay? That was fantastic.” Mark shook hands with Jonah. “Did y’all want a beer, or should I pack you up and carry you back to the hotel?”

“Up to you, KT. I’m easy.”

“I’m riding the high of music. I say back to the hotel and maybe order some food or something.”

Mark nodded easily. “I’ll drop y’all off. I have an early flight, so I got a hotel by the airport.”

“It was good seeing you, sir.” Jonah shook Mark’s hand.

“You too. You call me if you ever need help setting up a showcase.”

Jonah chuckled softly and grabbed his guitar.
